Gives an good historical perspective/refresher on French history that leads to a better appreciation of the country and its places.
This book was recommended by the Smithsonian Institute for a trip to France. Although I have trouble differentiating the kings and pretenders, the approach helped me to stay interested. It touched on all the important aspects of the past and present life of the French.
Not for the superficial visitor, but for those determined to get the most out of your travels.

It was a time line that gave almost equal time / wt sometimes giving too light a treatment of some periods like 17th - 19th centuries. I could have used more connection between the places and the story line.
I was very satisfied with Becky's handling of the product. It arrived promptly and was in good condition. The book had been wet at some time but it appeared to have been dried properly and without discoloration. The cover appeared brand new. I would use Becky's again.
As a history it was just that, a traveler's history. Historians need not apply.
I have used this book for French Culture class for years, through 3 editions. It is especially fine for study abroad because it is lightweight.
